Trials in Therapy Room Progress

Hi! I'm Amanda. Mother to three wonderful kids. My oldest daughter is Alyssa, my youngest daughter is Trinity and my son is Joseph Jr "LJ". They are my life. Alyssa is what we in the special needs world call neuro-typical. Trinity was diagnosed with ADHD almost 4 years ago and LJ was diagnosed with Aspergers, ADHD and some oppositional behaviors in October 2010. I knew right away something was different with Trinity. The ped finally did the assessments when her grades starting slipping to almost failing in school. Luckily the first medicine we tried was perfect for her. She responded well and her grades got much better. She is still doing great today with only an increase in the dosage of her medicine this past school year.

When LJ came along I kept comparing his progress to that of the girls'. Everyone kept telling me that he was a boy and boys do things slower. I knew in my gut though that something wasn't right. It wasn't normal. We finally got our answers last October thanks to Dr. Turner. We were originally given a diagnosis by the OT and our former pediatrician of sensory processing disorder. We were allowed 20 OT vitis/year. This was fine when we were only seeing the OT. However; we started seeing a PT due to LJ's constant toe walking and the insurance informed us that therapy was limited to 20 visits/year for OT and PT combined. That's only 10 visits for each therapist for the entire year! What a rip off! We started this year off going once/week and then we switched to once/month. We're trying to drag out the available visits until school starts back up. I do what I can at home, but we have limited space in our house.

Several months ago, we purchased a 12x16 storage building that I had intended to turn into a sewing room for myself. Money got tight and I didn't have the extra to put into wiring the room to make it usable. So, we're just using it for storage at the moment. It dawned on me last weekend that the perfect use of that space would be a therapy room for LJ. I knew it would take quite a bit of money for the project. And I knew I'd have to do something to earn that money. And what better way to do it than by doing what I love. Sewing and embroidery. I'll be offering a plethora of items for sale with all profits going towards the project of the therapy room.

I will use this blog as a way to track my progress and post pictures of the progress. I want everyone who supports me to be able to look back here and know they're helping out my little man. With the therapy room, we'll be able to provide more at home care for him in a room free of the distractions that he would have in the bedroom or kitchen or living room.

Thanks in advance to everyone that supports this! Your kindness is much appreciated.
